Question
32. (10 pts) Refer to the figure on the right, showing results from a glucose absorption experiment. The data were collected under two experimental conditions: Aerobic and Anaerobic, as shown. 60 50 40 - 30 20 Aerobic How do these results support or refute our model of glucose uptake by active transport mechanisms? Anaerobic 0 0 10 20 30 40 50 Glucose (mML) The x-axis shows the concentration of glucose in solution administered into the intestinal lumen; the y-axis is the rate of glucose transported across the small intestine (mmoles per hour).Explanation / Answer
Ans. From the graph it can be concluded that the uptake of glucose would be greater in case of aerobic comdition whereas on the contrary less glucose molecules are transported in case of anaerobic conditions. More ATP is harvested in case of aerobic glucose metabolism whereas less ATP is harvested in case of anaerobic respiration. In the above graph it has been portrayed that aerobic metabolism follows exponential which means a steep rise in uptake of glucose molecule and followed by constant growth whereas anaerobic metabolism is characterised by a linear relationship.
