She was able to keep up with her housekeeping and still tended a small garden in her backyard. Just that morning Janice had told her mother not to spend too much time working in the garden, given the weather especially since her mother did not have air-conditioning When Janice arrived at her mother's house, she found Marion unconscious on the sofa. All of the windows in the house were closed. Janice immediately tried to rouse her mother, but her mother seemed delirious. Janice called for help and the emergency services operator instructed her to apply cool wash cloths to her mother's forehead and face, and if possible to position her in front of a fen while using a spray bottle of tepid water on her skin. When paramedics arrived Merion was conscious but confused and feeling nauseous. At the hospital the doctor told Janice how lucky she was to have visited her mother when she did. Ans. 1 One of the homeostasis mechanism for maintaining body temperature is through the thermoregulatory receptors located in the hypothalamus. It is acheived by activation of the sweat glands leading to an evaporative cooling and secondly by dilation of the skin blood vessels as a result of which capillaries get filled with warm blood leading to radiation of heat from skin surface till the temperature is brought to normal.
Ans 2. Aging affects the sweat glands to prespire resulting in malfunctioning of the body temperature regulation. Also a decrease in amount of fat beneath the skin has been noticed in elderly persons leading to improper regulation of body temperature.
Ans 3. Heat exhaustion is characterised by general weakness, heavy sweating, nausea and vomiting. Heat exhaustion occurs due to dehydration, wearing warm cloths and due to consumption of alcohol.
Heat stroke is characterised by elevated body temperatures, loss of consciousness, rapid pulsating heart rate. Prolonged duration of heat exhaustion would lead to heart stroke and is considered as a medical emergency.
