Question

(a) In the figure below find the direction of the current in the wire that would produce a magnetic field directed as shown. O out of the page toward the toward the righ toward the top of the page toward the bottom of the page (b) In the figure below find the direction of the current in the wire that would produce a magnetic field directed as shown. out of the page nto the page toward the left toward the right O toward the top of the page toward the bottom of the page (c) In the figure below find the direction of the current in the wire that would produce a magnetic field directed as shown.

Explanation / Answer

Right hand thumb rule is used to find the direction of current. To use this rule, curl the fingers of right hand and stretch the thumb. If the fingers show the direction of the magnetic field, the thumb points in the direction of the current. Also the cross represents the field going into the plane while a dot represents the field coming out of the plane.

a. The field goes into the plane above the conductor and comes out of the plane below the conductor. For this situation, the thumb points towards the left. Hence current is towads the left.

b. The field is anti-clockwise. If fingers curl anti-clockwise then the thum points outwards. So current flows out of the plane.

c. The field comes out of the plane above the conductor and goes into the plane below the conductor. For this situation, the thumb points towards the right. Hence current is towads the right (more precisely North-east).
