Question

Entering a freeway. A car sits in an entrance ramp to a freeway, waiting for a break in the traffic. The driver accelerates with constant acceleration along the ramp and onto the free way. The car starts from rest. moves in a straight line, and has a speed of 20 m/s (45 mi/h) when it reaches the end of the 120-m-long ramp. (a) what is the acceleration of the car? (b) how much time does it the car to travel the length of the ramp? (c) the traffic on the freeway is moving at contact speed of 20 m/s. what distance does the traffic while the car moving the length of the ramp?

Explanation / Answer

Please ask if you have any doubt.I will help you.

Initially car is at rest ,U = 0.Given the car covers S = 120m and its final speed is V = 20m/s .

a) Using the equation ,V2 - U2 = 2aS ,a = acceleration gives a = 400/240 = 1.67m/s2.

b)Time taken by car will be given by the equation t = (V-U)/a which is t = 20/1.67 = 12s

c) distance moved by traffic will be (20m/s)(12s) = 240m.
