Question
Germ Cell Specification Flies and mice show similarities and differences in the mechanisms used for germ cell specification. Your answers should include details about the genes and molecular pathways that function in germ cell specification. Make sure that your answers are detailed and specific to germ cell specification and not overly general/broad similarities! a. Describe one similarity between flies and mice in the mechanism for germ cell specification. b. Describe one difference between flies and mice in the mechanism for germ cell specification.Explanation / Answer
a. similarity
Both flies and mouse has dedicated set of germ cell precursor . pole cells in flies and prdm1+/prdm14+ precursor cell in mice have same potency for differentiation.
b. differences
In flies PGCs depends on meternally derived germplasm, the OSKAR gene play important role in maternal germplasm which requits NANOS and supports the correct migration of PGC. Whereas in mice, it does not depends on maternal germplasm.genes like NANOS activated late in developmental stage. Here NANOS2 gene inhibits the meiosis in male embryo.
however the mechanism of germ cell specification is complex in both. hence i tried to make it short and simple to understand.
