Question
A puck is moving on an air hockey table. Relative to an x, y, coordinate system at time t = 0 s, the x component of the puck's initial velocity and acceleration are v0x = +1.0 m/s and ax = +1.8 m/s2. The y components of the puck's initial velocity and acceleration are v0y = +2.0 m/s and ay = -1.4 m/s2.(a) Is the magnitude of the x component of the velocity increasing or decreasing in time?
(b) Is the magnitude of the y component of the velocity increasing or decreasing in time?
(c) Find the magnitude and direction of the puck's velocity at a time t = 0.45 s. Specify the direction relative to the +x axis. Be sure that your calculations are consistent with your answers above.
magnitude ___________ m/s
direction ________ ° above or below the +x axis
Explanation / Answer
a) magnitude of velocity in x component always increases as acceleration and velocity are in same direction which is +ve x axis.
b)magnitude of velocity in y component firstly decreases and after some time it increases.
c)at t = 0.45 sec
vx = v0x +axt = 1 +1.8*0.45 = + 1.81 m/sec
vy = v0y +ayt = 2 - 1.4*0.45 = + 1.37 m/sec
velocity of puck =(vx2 +vy2) = (1.812 + 1.372) = 2.27 m/sec
The direction is above x axis because vy is +ve.
