Question

I need help with my physics homework. We are covering the chapter on Vectors. i managed to do all of them except 7. please help. Question 2 has a picture

1. one of the fastest recorded pitches in major-league baseball, thrown by Joel Zumaya in 2006, was clocked at 101.0 mi/h. if a pitch were thrown horizontally with this velocity, how far would the ball fall vertically by the time it reached home plate, 60.5 ft away?

2. a student stands at the edge of a cliff and throws a stone horizontally over the edge with a speed of 18 m/s. the cliff is 50 m above a flat, horizontal beach as shown in figure p3.23. (a) what are the coordinates of the initial position of the stone (b) what are the components of the initial velocity (c) write the equations for the x and y components of the velocity of the stone with time (d) write the equations for the position of the stone with time, using the coordinates in figure p3.23 (e) how long after being released does the stone strike the beach below the cliff (f) with what speed and angle of impact does the stone land? picture

3. a tennis player standing 12.6 m from the net hits the ball at 3.00 (degrees) above the horizontal. to clear the net, the ball must rise at least 0.330 m. if the ball just clears the net at the apex of its trajectory, how fast was the ball moving when it left the racket?

4. a brick is thrown upward from the top of a building at an angle of 25 degrees to the horizontal and with an initial speed of 15 m/s. if the brick is in flight for 3.0 s, how tall is the building?

5. a fireman 50.0m away from a burning building directs a stream of water from a ground level fire hose at an angle of 30.0 degrees above the horizontal. if the speed of the stream as it leaves the hose is 40.0 m/s, at what height will the stream of water strike the building?

6. a rocket is launched at an angle of 53 degrees above the horizontal with an initial speed of 100 m/s. the rocket moves for 3.00 s along its initial line of motion with an acceleration of 30.0 m/s^2. at this time, its engine fail and the rocket proceeds to move as a projectile. find: (a) the maximum altitude reached by the rocket (b) its total time of flight (c) its horizontal range

7. a home run is hit in such a way that the baseball just clears a wall 21 m high, located 130 m from home plate. the ball is hit an an angel of 35 degrees to the horizontal, and air resistance is negligible. find: (a) the initial speed of the ball (b) the time it takes the ball to reach the wall (c) the velocity components and the speed of the ball when it reaches the wall (assume the ball is hit at a height of 1.0 m above the ground).

Explanation / Answer

First how long does it take to get to home base 60.5 ft = 18.44 meters 101 mph = 45.15 m/s t = 18.44 m / 45.15 m/s = 0.408 sec now how far will something fall in that time d = ½gt² d = ½(9.8)(0.408)² = 0.817 meter = 2.68 feet or 2 feet 8 3/16 inch but the actual fastest pitch is: Joel Zumaya 104.8 mph 10-10-2006
