Question

Hope someone can help me with this problem:

The blood pressure is reported as common in millimeters of mercury or height of a column of mercury which has the same value of pressure.
Typical values ??for a human are 130/80, the first value is the systolic pressure during the contraction of the ventricles of the heart and the second value is the diastolic pressure during contraction of the auricles of the heart.
Here comes the problem.

The head of a giraffe is at 6.0 m above the ground, the giraffe's heart is at 2.0 m above the ground.
What is the required minimum systolic blood pressure in the heart to pump blood to the head (despise additional pressure required to overcome the effects of viscosity)?
The density of the giraffe's blood is 1.00 g / cm ^ 3 and the mercury is 13.6 g / cm ^ 3

Explanation / Answer

Height of head above ground = 6 m = 600 cm
Height of Heart above ground = 2 m = 200 cm

The heart is required to maintain atleast the pressure exerted on it by the blood above the heart.
So heart is required to maintain atleast the pressure exerted by (600 - 200)cm of blood.

Pressure due to (600 - 200) = 400cm of blood, P = 400g

where is the density of giraffe's blood,

g is acceleration due to gravity.

P = 400 x 1 x g = 400g    dyn/cm2

Now We need to convert this pressure in terms of the height of mercury coloumn.

400g = H m g

where: H = height of mercury coloumn

m = density of mercury , g = acceleration due to gravity.

( g cancells out)

H = 400 / 13.6 = 29.41 cm of Mercury

= 294.1 mm of mercury
