Question
Hummingbirds weigh 1/10 of an ounce and need 10 calories per day. That equates to 100 calories per ounce. So that you can better relate to the hummingbird's eating dilemma, complete the following activity.
A. Indicate the number of calories per day you would need if you burned energy at the same rate as a hummingbird (I would need to consume 179,200 calories!). Show all your work.
B. Indicate the number of servings of your favorite food you'd have to consume per day if you burned energy at the same rate as a hummingbird. Show all your work. This is very likely to be a huge number so don’t freak out if your answer looks crazy.
Explanation / Answer
A. My weight is 130 Pounds. As the comparision is given in ounce, I would need to convert this weight into ounce.
1 Pound = 16 ounce
=> 130 Pounds = 130 * 16 ounce = 2080 ounces
As humming Bird consumes 100 calories per ounce,
=> Energy consumed by 1 ounce = 100 Calories
=> Energy consumed by 2080 ounce (my weight) = 2080 * 100 Calories = 208000 Calories.
Extra information: A normal adult person around my weight would require around 2000 Calories per day. This amount is around 100 times more than that.
B. My favorite food is Mc Donald's Big Mac having 563 Calories per serving (7.6 oz). To get the calories required by me from Big Mac, I would need:
563 Calories can be obtained from = 1 serving
=> 1 Calorie can be obtained from = 1/563 serving
=> 208000 Calories can be obtained from = 208000/563 servings = 370 servings.
Extra infoormation : Eating 5 Big Mac would be a big task in a day. Imagine eating 370 Big Macs everyday.
