Question

a) Five identical resistors, each of resistance R, are connected in series to a battery, and a current of 7.05 A flows in the circuit. Now, another resistor of resistance R is added to the circuit, in series with the rest of the resistors. Find the new current in the circuit.
___________A

b) Five identical resistors, each of resistance R, are connected in parallel to a battery, and a current of 7.05 A flows in the circuit. Now, another resistor of resistance R is added to the circuit, in parallel with the rest of the resistors. Fnd the new current in the circuit.
___________A

c) Five identical resistors, each of resistance R, are connected in series to a battery, and a current of 7.05 A flows in the circuit. Now, another resistor of resistance R is added to the circuit, in parallel with the battery. Find the new total current in the circuit.
___________A

Explanation / Answer

a) Voltage is constant hence I1R1 = I2R2 = 7.05 *5R = I2*6R

=> I2 = 5.875 A

b) Same as above just the net resistance of the circuit is now changed

=>I1R1 = I2R2 = 7.05*(R/5) = I2*(R/6)

I2 = 8.46 A

c) New net resistance = 1/((1/5R) + (1/R)) = 5R/6

7.05*5R = I2*(5R/6)

I2 = 42.3A
