Question
there are several inherited conditions that are linked to abnormal mitochondrial enzymes. Because of these defective enzymes, the mitochondria of people with these disorders are not able to generate ATP as efficiently as those of normal individuals.Cells throughout the body may be affected but the most frequent symptoms involve muscle and nerve cells. Explain why the muscle and nerve cells would be affected more seriously than, for example, skin cells. (using knowledge of mitochondrial functions)
Explanation / Answer
Muscle and nerve cells perform actions such as contracting (muscle cell) or sending action potentials (nerve cell). This requires more ATP than a skin cell. Mitochondria are needed produce ATP so the cell to perform its function would be diminished.
