Question

You are driving you: car along a country road at a speed of 27.0 m/s. As you come over the crest of a hill, you notice a farm tractor 25.0 m ahead of you that is going at a speed of 10.0 m/s. You immediately slam on your brakes and slow down with a constant acceleration of magnitude 7.00 m/s2. Will you hit the tractor before you stop? How far will you travel before you stop or collide with the tractor? If you stop, how far is the tractor in front of you when you finally stop? Pay attention to any significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

Relatice speed = 27 - 10 = 17m/s

using equation

v2 = u2 + 2as

v2 = 17*17 + 2*(-7)*25 = -61m=> you will stop before hitting

again using above equation

0*0 = 27*27+ 2(-7)s

s = 50.07 m with respect to ground

0*0 = 17*17 + 2(-7)s'

s' = 20.64 m with respect to tractor

Hence distance from tractor = 25 - 20.64 = 4.36m
