The fungus might manipulate plant hormones and use the nutrition by symbiotic relationship. in this both the fungus and the plant benefit from each other. As the fungus grows on the maple leaves it levaes the green spots which increases the rate of photosynthesis in the plant till the leaves are intact on the plant. After the senescence it continues to benefit the fungus through photosynthesis and nutrition.

A strategy that can be used to test this hypothesis is making a comparison between how long fungus grows with and withoti the infected maple leaves. The rate of photosynthesis in presence and absence of the fungus can also be tested for identification.
