Question
Search and identify a real world operations research problem that has been successfully solved, implemented and created value for a business. Discuss the problem and its solution with following items in not more than 2 pages The background of the problem. What did they want to achieve? (Objective) What can be controlled/ What did they want to decide? (Decision Variables) What cannot be controlled/What did they take as input? (Parameters) What were the limits? (Constraints) What did they assume? (Assumption) What was the value created with the implementation of the solution? -Explanation / Answer
Since you required on real-world operation Problem that.
Internet Traffic Management at Workplace
Back ground= few years the variety of things one can do with the internet has grown. From accessing web pages to watching movies and music. These modern uses, such as video streaming, need lots of data compared to the uses of the past.
This leads to a problem. If too much web traffic is sent along the same route then congestion occurs. The physical network of cables need to be used effectively to provide everyone with a quick and reliable service
Objective
the Routing Problem is an unrealistic simplification. It assumes that the demand is constant. This is unlikely to be the case. The internet is much busier at 6 pm than 3 am. OSPF tries to optimize the weight on each link given some predicted demand of the network to reduce the future congestion.
Decision Variables
Firstly an ISP(internet service provider) assigns some load data to the network links. Then the shortest paths between links are computed using these load data. The next link on all shortest paths to all possible destinations is stored in a table for each node. Then, a flow arriving at the router is sent to its destination by splitting the flow between the links that are on the shortest paths to the destination
Parameters
Suppose we want to send some data from Lancaster to Norwich. If we knew the weights of the links then we could use Dijkstra's Algorithm find the shortest path. Then send our data
Constraints
We need to add restrictions to ensure that the data is sent along paths between the nodes.
Assume
The various assumptions involved are considering the links does not use the shortest link only, it only chooses the path randomly
There was a huge value created since it involves various control of internet providing, involving current technology. It is helpful over every tech hub and Wireless communication data transfer.
