Question
Two genetics students, let's call them David and Sid, got bored with their Drosophila experiment. David suggested that they sneak the flies down to the Radiation Biology Lab for some extra treatment. While there, David exposed the flies and (oops!) Sid to Cs", a powerful ionizing radiation source. It was a very short exposure, but David was worried. He became even more upset when wingless flies appeared in the irradiated, wild-type fly culture. He wondered whether Sid had also been mutagenized. A. Given your knowledge of radiation's effects on DNA and the ability of mammals to handle acute radiation-induced damage, do you believe that Sid should be worried? What about Sid's future prospects as a father (assuming someone is deranged enough to oblige our hypothetical student)? Explain B. While the two students were panicking, the third member of the group, let's call him Andrew, was sensibly determining whether the mutations could be reversed. He treated the wingless mutant flies with different mutagens observing all proper precautions. He found that the mutants fell into the categories listed below Mutant Category Reverts with AP, BU, EMS, HA AP, BU, EMS, not HA Acridine dye only EMS only (Note: AP-2-aminopurine, BU-5-bromo-deoxyuridine, EMS ethyl methane sulfonate, and HA-hydroxylamine) What is the most likely nature of the mutants in each category? (transition, etc.) Be as specific as possible. Explain briefly, o Binder Reflect in ePortfolioExplanation / Answer
A. Ionizing radiation has sufficient energy to cause chemical changes in cells and damage them. Some cells may die or become abnormal, either temporarily or permanently. By damaging the genetic material contained in the body's cells, radiation can cause cancer. Fortunately, our bodies are extremely efficient at repairing cell damage. The extent of the damage to the cells depends upon the amount and duration of exposure as well as the organs exposed.
The exposure is a very acute, Sid need not worry about of the effects of the exposure and this future prospects as father are bright. There should not be any problems in him becoming a father.
B.
Mutant category 1- All function by substitution
Mutant category 2- All nucleotide analogs but not HA
Mutant category 3- It causes frameshift mutation by deleting or inserting one or more bases.
Mutant category 4- It induces random mutations
