Two inductors L 1.34 H and L 2.28 H are connected in series and are separated by a large distance so that the magnetic field of one cannot affect the other. (a) Calculate the equivalent inductance. (Hint: Review the derivations for resistors in series and capacitors in series. Which is similar here?) (b) What is the generalization of (a) for N 8 similar inductors L 3.09 H in series? ..unes Answer 1 the tolerance is +/-2% Answer 2: the tolerance is +/-2%

Explanation / Answer

When the inductors are connected in series, the equivalent inductance is given by:

Leq = L1 + L2 + L3 + ...

therefore,

a] Leq = 1.34 + 2.28 = 3.62 H

b] when L = 3.09 H and 8 such inductors are connected in series then the equivalent inductance will be:

Leq = 8L = 8(3.09) = 24.72 H.
