Question

Cataracts are a sort of cloudiness that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye. They are treated by replacing the affected lens with a flexible, adaptive intraocular lens, or IOL. Adaptive IOLs have a fixed focal point but they flex (change location) when the focusing muscles of the eye contract, allowing for a degree of accommodation. Suppose a flexible, adaptive IOL has a focal length of 3.00 cm. How far forward must the IOL move to change the focus of the eye from an object at infinity to an object at a distance of 50.0 cm?

Explanation / Answer

Use lens formula,

1/f = 1/v + 1/u

initially, u = infinity

so, 1/f = 1/v + 0

=> v = 3 cm

later, u = 50 cm

so, 1/3 = 1/v' + 1/50

=> v' = 3.1915 cm

so, the distance which the IOL must move to change the focus from inifnity to 50 cm will be: v' - v = 0.1915 cm.
