One morning you went to feed your goats and notice that one is not coming up to eat the feed you put out. He is standing with his head extended and walking in an unnatural way. As he turns to the side, you notice that his left side is extremely swollen. What condition does this goat have? What are possible causes of this condition? How will you treat your goat? 1. 2. 1. The condition that the goat is suffering from is bloat.
The possible causes of this condition can be from overaeating of damp feeds, with a high proprtion of legumes which causes accumulation of gas in the rumen of the goat ; the gas forms foam which is termed as frothy bloat.
The other kind of bloat is dry bloat which may be caused from choking of esophagus by eating plastic bags, resulting in bloat. The other kind can be caused from displacement of the stomach in pregnant goats.
Preventive measures of bloat includes to prevent the goats from grazing on wet or frothy pasture, giving dry hay to the goats during the first meal of the day, preventing rapid eating by the hungry ones, keeping water and salt available at all times and feeding them in lower proportions at multiple times of the day.
