Question

can you please answer questions 35 and 36 please. both questions are based on the diagram and I would really like to know how to do them. thank you.

A 160 mm ear would be produced by a plant with-_ additive alleles. a) 2 b) 3 c) 4 d) 56 2 60 69-6 1 g0

Explanation / Answer

ratio of F2 progeny expressing either extreme phenotype in quantitaive inheritance = 1/4n .......(1)

where n represents gene pair

extreme phenotype in this case is corn having ear length 100mm or 180mm

so its ratio is=3/768 = 1/256 = 1/44

now compare with equation (1)

you will find n=4

34) so option D is the answer

35) the difference between heights of true breeding =180-100 = 80mm

so this difference must be result from the presence of contributing alleles. The tall plants has 8 contributing allele (4 gene pair as found in problem 34).

so each dominant allele contributes an average of (80/8) = 10mm

so option B is correct answer.

36) difference between height = 160-100 = 60mm

in problem 35 we found that each additive allele is contributing 10mm length.

so total number of additive allele for 60mm = 60/10 = 6

Hence option e is correct answer.
