Question
Perform the following experiment:
Demonstrate the basic transformer action by constructing a circuit consisting of two coils, a switched dc source, and a multimeter to measure current (see figure 33.21).
a) Why is there no current induced in the secondary coil when the switch is held closed?
b) Compare the direction of the induced current when the switch is first closed and opened.
Diode input) ALA A Figure 33.21 (a) A half-wave rectifier with an optional filter capacitor. (b) Current versus time in the resistor. The solid curve represents the current with no filter capacitor, and the dashed curve is the cur- rent when the circuit includes the capacitorExplanation / Answer
(a) There is no change in magnetic flux because current is not vary when switch is held closed, hence there is no induced current in the secondary coil.
(b) induced current generated magnetic flux so it will oppose the source magnetic flux , therefore current should be in same direction as in first coil.
