Meeting the world’s growing energy needs while mitigating the effects on climate and environment is one of the most demanding challenges of our present times.

Managing energy is directly related to other types of management within an organization such as resource management , asset management and risk management and thus requires understanding of its uses within organization .

At the core of energy management is Monitoring and Targeting(M & T)

M&T aims to identify opportunities to save energy. Monitoring is the process of establishing existing patterns of energy use and identifying drivers and variables of those patterns. Targeting refers to the identification of the desirable level of energy use.

The above process would require making inspections several different times to the sites .

For eg: In educational organizations like school ,colleges,and institutes, there are many different rooms at different levels in the building and there may be multiple such buildings ,each having many electronic and electrical equipments like fans , projectors , lights, airconditioners,sound systems, heavy machinery and equipments for laboratory and experiments. Clean room and ventilation systems have significant energy needs which vary based on differnt times of day , temperature and weather and activities carried out. All this requires adoption of good energy management principles and human resources like technicians,lab and library incharges, class room monitors or representatives, all trying to work together conciously at saving energy by reducing unnecessary usage.

Now with techological advancements everyday we can use more efficient equipments and smart monitoring systems within the organizations.For eg:Most commercial buildings in Australia are using building management systems to monitor and adjust energy and water usage for maximum efficiency. The Australian Research Institute building uses an integrated building system that coordinates all of the building’s technologies – heating and cooling, hydraulics, fire monitoring, lighting, security and lab controls – in a single platform. The system has helped to save 18% in whole building energy savings.By installing sensors into a building to monitor where people are, the system could predict which areas are not likely to be used at a certain time and save energy costs by turning off the lighting and climate control in those areas.

So we can safely say that automation has a very significant role to play to meet our energy needs.
