2. Amplitude modulation and demodulation (a) 5 points Consider the following statements. Print T/F for true/false in the space provided in-front of each statement. i. Amplitude modulation (AM) is less power efficient than double side-band suppress carrier (DSE-SC) modulation. ii. AM requires a larger transmission bandwidth than that of DSB-SC. iii. Single side-band (SSB) modulation is more bandwidth efficient than both AM and DSB-SC. iv. SSB modulation is suited for transmission of voice signals due to the in- herent energy-gap in low-frequencies. v. Vestigial side-band IVSB) modulation is used not used for commercial TV broadcasting, cos(2r fet. where k, is the modulator sensitivity, m(f) is the message signal and f is the frequency of the carrier signal. Suppose that the message signal m t) is a periodic rectangular-triangular wave shown in Fig 2 ST 5T Figure 2: Message signal m(t) for part (b) i. points Determine k for 50% modulation. Sketch the amplitude modulated signal s() for 50% modulation.Explanation / Answer
In this question which you have provided there are many different questions and part (a) has more than 4 sub parts. So, as per the guideline, I am provididing the solution to part (a). The other parts should be posted in the form of different questions.
(a).
i, TRUE-----> Beacuse in amplitude modulation career and both the Upper and Lower side band is present. Career power is the unwanted power and sideband power is the desired power. On the other hand in DSB-SC, the career power is suppressed. So, DSB-SC is more efficient compared to Amplitude Modulation.
ii. FALSE----> Both AM and DSB-SC requires same transmission bandwidth because the thickness of the Sidebands remains the same.
iii. TRUE-----> Single Side Band (SSB) modulation is much more bandwidth efficient than both AM and DSB-SC because it has only one sideband and one side band is enough to regenerate the baseband signal at the receiving end.
iv. FALSE----> It is practically impossible to design a filter that will allow only one sideband and cut off the other band. So, in theory it is possible but keeping the practical aspect in mind, its next to impossible.
v. TRUE---> VSB modulation is used for TV broadcasting. In this case one side band and some portion of the other sideband is used.
Hope this helps.
