Question

What is the role of the switching frequency when generating PWM? How does the switching frequency change the generation of PWM (i.e., how does the algorithm or the inputs to the algorithm change)? What limits, if any, are placed on the switching frequency? What is the role of the fundamental frequency when generating PWM? How does the fundamental frequency change the generation of PWM (i.e., how does the algorithm or the inputs to the algorithm change)? What limits, if any, are placed on the fundamental frequency?

Explanation / Answer

PWM stands for pulse width modulation . It is a technique to generate the switching pulses for a control equipment.

In this PWM technique , two waveforms are compared in their magnitude , whenever the carrier waveform is more than that of reference waveform a pulse will be generated . Therefore the width and the no.of the pulses are mainly depends on the switching frequency and fundamental frequency .

When switching frequency is more than that of fundamental frequency , lesser the pulse widths , and more the pulses generated per a cycle.

When fundamental frequency is more than that of switching frequency , larger the pulse width and lesser the pulses generated per a cycle.
