Question
The following circuit in figure (a) has two switches. Switch S1 is on and connects the voltage source (Vs = 24 V) to the current source (Io = 2 A). It is desired to open switch S1 to disconnect Vs from the current source. This requires that a second switch S2 close to provide a path for current Io as shown in figure (b). At a later time, S1 must reclose and S2 must open to restore the circuit to its original condition. The cycle is to repeat at a frequency of 200 kHz. Determine the type of device required for each switch and the maximum voltage and current requirements of each.Explanation / Answer
1.Solid state Relays(SSR) or Solid State Switches are used for Switching operation of above switches S1 and S2which will be turned ON or OFF at 200 KHz frequency i.e. at
5 micro Seconds
The given Sources are DC.
The Common Solid State switches (SSR) used for DC are Power Transistors, Darlington's or MOSFETS.
2. The maximum voltage appears across switch S1 when it is in open condition, here in this case the voltage V1max is Vs i.e. 24 volts
Similarly the maximum current flow through switch S1 occurs is when it is in closed condition, here in this case i1max is I0 i.e. 2Amps
Similar analysis for Switch S2
V2max = Vs = 24 V
i2max = I0 = 2 A
