Performance Test of Compression Ignition Engine Michael Adrian Vallecera Ygnacio Abstract: Internal Combustion (IC) engines are widely used in the automobile industry and ever since its creation, the demand these engines are growing each year. However IC engines are known to be pollutants and one of the major culprits to climate change due to the harmful exhaust gases these engines emits. Thus the need to produce efficient and economical engines arise. It is known that engines that are efficient and working at high performance shows lesser emissions. This study investigates the CI engine's operation performance. In this study, the effects of varying the load and throttle positions under load and without load was also determined. The torque produced by the engine, specific fuel consumption, engine speed and temperatures were gathered. These parameters are needed in order to determine the efficiency of the Diesel Engine

Explanation / Answer

Efficiency of an engine defines how effectively the fuel is being burnt and the heat released during pwer stroke which is utilised for driving the engine components and the load.We know that proper air fuel ratio and time of mixing is required for better combustion which ultimately defines the power output of the engine.In CI engine as it is based on constant pressure thermodynamic process in which fuel injection can be regulted at different speeds of the engine.

The above tables of performance analysis on CI engine is critically studied and following observations can be made on test data

1.For a particular throttling parameter efficiency is decreased with increse in speed of the engine subsequently decrease in torque and power output except at 3400 rpm.

2.Emission is directly related to combustion of the fuel so better the fuel mixing better the combustion and lower the emission.At 3400 rpm with 75% throtlling maximum efficiency is obtaind around 21.699 ,but heating value of the fuel is lower of about 15.8505

3.At lower speeds with 25% throttling it can be clearly seen that at 1100 rpm we get higher effiency of 10.97 with 3.255 kW of heating value which is much higher than 1400 rpm speed.

4.At 3000 rpm it is being observed that on increasing the throttling efficiency is exponentialy high, as on adding more fuel it is mixed properly with air and combustion is proper reasulting in higher heating value.

From the above analysis it can be said that emission will be lower at 3000 rpm with 75% throttling .
