Question

Task 1 Y ou have steel what use for tool production Steel grade C120. From that material was made drill ø22. After manufacturing that drill was hardened. Y our task is suggesting heat treatment technology what can reduce intemal stresses what accrued after hardening 1) Type of process + description; 2) Temperature range; 3) Final structure and properties Task 2 Y ou have steel plate what will use for car body production Steel grade C10. That steel plate was made with cold rolling process. Y our task is suggesting heat treatment technology for improving wo rkability of that steel plate. 1) Type of process + description; 2) Explain why it is necessary; 3) Explain why you choose it Task 3 You have shaft what was manufactured from forged material what is subjected to milling and tuming processing. Steel grade C45. Y our task is suggesting heat treatment technology for improving shaft quality 1) Type of processes + description; 2) Temperature range; 3) Final structure and properties

Explanation / Answer

1. Internal stresses of a ductile material is removed by stress relieving annealing process. In this type of heat treatment process, the workpiece is not heated beyond the critical temperature. At higher temperature, the lattice atoms move to rearrange themselves, relieving the internal stresses. Also, no change in microstructure takes place. This process takes place in the temperature range of 720- 800°C. It induces refinement of grains with gain in ductility and toughness and removal of gases and stresses.

2. Workability of steel is improved when normalizing heat treatment process is employed. In normalizing, the specimen is heated slightly beyond the upper critical temperature in the range of 900- 1000°C and is cooled in still air rather than in the furnace. The increased rate of cooling results in slight hardening as well as loss of ductility. It improves strength and workability of the material. I chose this process becuase of rapid cooling which renders it more workable and has better strength than before.
