Question
Two point charges, Q1 and Q2, are located a distance 0.20 meter apart, as shown above. Charge Q1 = +8.0(micro)C. The net electric field is zero at point P, located 0.40 meter from Q1 and 0.20 meter from Q2.
a. Determine the magnitude and sign of charge Q2.
b. Determine the magnitude and direction of the net force on charge Q1
c. Calculate the electrostatic potential energy of the system.
d. Determine the coordinate of the point R on the x-axis between the two charges at which the electric potential is zero.
e.How much work is needed to bring an electron from infinity to point R. which was determined in the previous part?
Explanation / Answer
Taking +ve x as +ve direction
A.) At P
Eq1 + Eq2 = 0
=> k*(8/0.42) + k*Q2/0.22 = 0
=> Q2 = - 8*0.22/0.42 = -2C
So Q2 = -2 C
B.) Force on Q1
F = - kQ1Q2/r2
= -9*109*8*(-2)*10-12/0.22 = 3.6 N
Force on Q1 = 3.8 N in +ve x- direction
C.) E = kQ1Q2/r = - 0.72 J
D.) Leta ta distance +x fom Q1
kQ1/x = kQ2/(0.2-x)
=> 4 = x/0.2-x
=> 5x = 0.8 => x = 0.16 m
Coordinate Of R on x-axis = 0.16 m
E.) At infinity V = 0
At point R , V = 0
delta V = 0
Work Done = q*delta V = 0
