Question

A manometer is a simple device to measure pressures that you will use in the lab. It consists of a U-shaped tube which contains a liquid (water in our case).

1. On the balloon side, the surface of the liquid is at point B. Write this pressure in terms of the pressure in the balloon.

2. Write the pressure at a point on the other side of the tube, at the same level as point B, in terms of atmospheric pressure.

3. Compare these two quantities and solve for the pressure in the balloon!

If the atmospheric pressure is 1.02 atm and the liquid height difference in the figure isy= 31 cm, what is the pressure in the balloon, in atm?

Explanation / Answer

The image is not availabele so i cant actually tell the first two parts but the pressure in the ballon could be found by bernoulli's equation, P(ballon) = P(atmosphere) + pgh, so P(ballon) = 1.02*10^5Pa + 13600*9.8*0.31 = 143316Pa

or 1.433 atm.
