Question

I mainly need help with (b). Thank you :)

3. A Drosophila mutation called curved (c) causes the wings to be curved instead of straight. A mutation called forked () causes the fly's bristles to be forked at the tip instead of straight. Flies homozygous for curved and forked were crossed with flies that were homozygous for normal wings and bristles. The F1 were intercrossed to produce the F2 and the following results were obtained. Two such crosses were done and the results are shown below. Cross 1 forked bristles, curved wings, x normal bristles and wings F1 420 426 normal bristles, normal wings normal bristles, normal wings F2 337 normal bristles, normal wings 113 normal bristles, curved wings 168 normal bristles, normal wings 170 forked bristles, normal wings 56 normal bristles, curved wings 58 forked bristles, curved wings Cross 2 forked bristles, curved wings x 3 normal bristles and wings F1 504 9 normal bristles, normal wings 498 forked bristles, normal wings 227 9 normal bristles, normal wings 223 forked bristles, normal wings 225 normal bristles, normal wings 225 3 forked bristles, normal wings 78 normal bristles, curved wings 76 forked bristles, curved wings 74 normal bristles, curved wings 72 forked bristles, curved wings F2 a. (4) What are the modes of inheritance of forked and curved? Explain your reasoning b. (4) Give the genotypes of the parents and F1 offspring in both crosses.

Explanation / Answer

Part b-

In the Cross 1-

The parents are having following genotypes-

Normal bristles and wings –FF CC

Forked bristles and curved wings male- ff cc

F1 would have then following genotypes-

FF CC                    x             ff cc

Ff Cc

In cross 2-

The parents are having following genotypes-

Normal bristles and wings male – Ff CC

Forked bristles and curved wings male- ff cc

F1 would have then following genotypes-

Ff CC                     x                            ff cc

Ff Cc      &            ff Cc
