Question

1a Eapt AbaieSutMer Ost This is the molecule AZT. it's used as an antiviral medicine. Specifically enzyme that synthesizes viral HIV RNA into DNA in side of human host cells. se transcriptase, the enzyme that sypthesizes Dg you think this is a competitive or noncompetitive inhibitpr of t A from the viral RNA template? Use you knowledge of enzyme inhibitors as well as your understanding of biological molecules. Briefly justify answer (answer must fit into space provided just to the right of the molecule -keep it short)

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

AZT is a competitive inhibitor of reverse transcriptase enzymes since they bind to enzymes active site. They are also known as nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors. AZT is the analog of nucleoside thymidine without phosphate groups. AZT gets incorporated into the developing nucleic acid and due to the lack oh functional -OH group, further nucleotides are not added resulting in premature termination of growing cDNA and hence reverse transcriptase stops working.
