Question

1.

A beam of  unpolarized light with intensity I0  =  44 W/m2 is sentrightward in the horizontal direction through 2 polarizing filters. Theunpolarized wave is shown below moving right toward Filter 1. The polarizing axis of Filter 1 is vertical . The polarizing axis of  Filter  2 makes an angle of 450   with the vertical. See  figure below.

(a) What is the intensity  I1 of the light beam (between the filters) after it has passed through Filter 1 ?
(b) What is the intensity  I2 of the light beam after it has passes through Filter 2?

Explanation / Answer

a) I1= I0/2 = 22 W/m^2

b) I2 = I1 cos^2(45) = I1/2 = 11 W/m^2
