Question
An object of mass 0.012 kg (big enough to consider gravity!) is in a constant downward electric field of 3.31x10^4 N/C.
It has a total downward acceleration of 2.20 m/s^2 and is released from rest.
a. Draw a free body diagram of the charge. How much charge is on the object? Give magnitude and also whether it is positive or negative.
b. How fast is the charge going after it has fallen 2.00 m?
c. How much have the following forms of energy changed in that 2.00m fall?
i. Electric potential energy
ii. Gravitational potential energy
iii. Kinetic energy
iv. Total energy
Please Help and Explain
Explanation / Answer
b. gravitational force = Electric force
ma = Eq
q = 0.012 * 2.2 /3.31*10^4
q = 0.79 uC
c. V^2 = 2 * 2* 2.2
V = 2.96 m/s
d. V = Ed = 3.31* 10^4 * 2 = 6.62 *10^4 volts
Electric pot energy U = Vq = 6.62*10^4 * 0.79 uC = 0.522 m J
grav pot energy = U = mgh = 0.012 *9.8 * 2 = 0.2352 J
KE = 0.5 * 0.012 * 8.8 = 0.0528 J
Total energy = 0.000522 + 0.2352 + 0.0528 = 0.288 J
