Question
In above Fig, the battery has a potential difference of 20 V and the five capacitors each have a capacitance of 10 µF.
1. what is the equivalent capacitance of the circuit?
2. what is the excess charge on capacitor 2?
For 1 I got 16 which was marked with a check (either correct or steps were correct so fine)
For part 2 which is where I need the help - I thought total capacitance x volts so did 16 x 20 for 320. (think that is incorrect)
Any help please, and work so I understand would be great! Studing for finals!!
Explanation / Answer
equivalent capacitance ... equivalent capacitor in series = C/2... equivalent in parallel = C+C/2 = 3C/2.... again equivalent in series = 3C/5.. again in parallel = 3C/5 + C = 8C/5 = 8*10/5 = 16... 2.. Q = CV... total current flowing = 16*10 = 160... current through 3C/5 capacitor = 3CV/ 5 = 60.... current flowing through C2 = 40
