a. The encountered species may be a gametophyte because according to the image, the plant does not show any signs of spore formation. Moreover, the plant is quite reduced as seen in gametophytes. As the image is not clear I am not sure.

The ferns need water to carry out reproduction. The male sperms have flagella that help them swim in water. Water acts as a medium for the sperm to travel to the female.
Ferns can only reproduce in water no matter where they grow, water is needed for reproduction. The sperm motility is affected in absence of water and they are unable to reproduce.
