Question

Before going in for an annual physical, a 77.0 kg person whose body temperature is 37.0 celcius consumes an entire 375ml bottle of a soft drink (which is mostly water) at 11.0 degees celcius . a) What will be the person's body temperature (Tfinal) after equilibrium is attained? Ignore any heating by the person's metabolism. The specific heat capacity of a human body is 3480 J/kg * K Give the equilibrium temperature in degrees Celsius, to four significant figures. Tfinal = ______________________degrees celsius b) Is the change in the person's body temperature great enough to be measured by a medical thermometer? (A high-quality medical thermometer can measure temperature changes as small as 0.1 degees celcius.) Yes or No Thanks. Explanation / Answer

(a)heat lost by the body = heat gained by the soft drink.......................................................................

mass of the drink = volume * density = 375*1 = 375 g=0.375kg

=>0.375*1000*(T-11) = 77*3480*(37-T)...............on solving this equation, Tfinal=36.96 oC.................

(b)the change is not great enough to be measured by a medical thermometer as the change is around 0.04 oC which cannot be detected by it
