Text:

Massive advances in DNA technology over the last 20 years mean that molecular biology and genetics are central in fields as diverse as forensics, epidemiology, screening for diseases and archaeology. The tools and the knowledge now available allow manipulation of the ‘blueprints’ of life and the creation of ‘novel’ organisms such as gene therapy.

Question:

Discuss about gene therapy. Do you support or against Gene therapy? If yes or no, give your reasons.

*Remark: It has to be at least 400 words in paragraphs form. (without plagiarism)

Explanation / Answer

Ans:- Gene Therapy:- gene therapy is a technique which involves the introduction of genes into the cells to prevent the defect caused by defective functions of the gene in the cell. this technique is used ro correct the defective genes which are responsible for disease development.Several approaches are used to correct the defective or abnormal gene.

1. a gene which is normal is inserted into a nonspecific location i the genome this process is called as gene addition and is the most common approach.

2. in the second approach the abnormal gene is replaced by the normal gene through homologous recombination rhis process is called as gene replacement.

3. in the third approach an abnormal gene is repaired through selective reverse mutation, which returns the gene to its normal function.

gene therapy can be carried either in somatic cell or germ cell currently gene therapy is exclusively somatic gene therapy while as the prospect of human germline therapy is not currently sanctioned.

gene therapy may be either classical or non classical gene therapy in case of classical gene therapy genes are delived to appropriate target cells with the aim of obtaining the optimal expression of the induced gene whileas in case of nonclassical type the gene is introduced to inhibit those genes which are associated with the pathogenesis or to correct the genetic defect for restoring the normal gene expression.

Gene delivery system:- one of the most important issue in case of somatic gene therapy is to find the efficient gene delivery system. and the appropriate methods to deliver DNA is used in gene theraoy is vital, as the targeted tissue must properly recieve the appropriate genes.

The basic gene transfer or delivery methods are

1. virus mediated trunsduction methods and

2. non-viral transfection methods.

yes i do support gene therapy if however it has some disadvantages but with its positive side it has created an oppurtunity to cure some diseases which are not cured by anyother means like

>>gene therapy can silence the disease even before it onset by silencing the gene for example incase of someone with HIV which had not yet developed into AIDS can be saved from it before its oncet.

>> gene therapy can be used to eliminate and prevent heriditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis and heart disease or cancer.

>> it is used to understand how genes work.
