Question

A hare and a tortoise compete in a race over a straight course 1.95 km long. The tortoise crawls at a speed of 0.100 m/s toward the finish line. The hare runs at a speed of 8.10 m/s toward the finish line for 1.560 km and then stops to tease the slow-moving tortoise as the tortoise eventually passes by. The hare waits for a while after the tortoise passes and then runs toward the finish line again at 8.10 m/s. Both the hare and the tortoise cross the finish line at the exact same instant. Assume both animals, when moving, move steadily at their respective speeds.

Explanation / Answer

Hare stops from finish line at = 1.95-1.56 = 0.39 km or 390 metres

Now both animals move at there respective speeds and cross the finish line at the same instant

Time taken for both to cover 390 metres

Hare = 390/8.1 = 48.148 secs

Tortoise = 390/0.1 = 3900 secs

Tortoise travels for 3900 - 48.148 = 3851.852 secs more after the resting point of hare

Therefore tortoise is 48.148 * 0.1 = 4.8148 metres from the finish line when hare resumes the race.
