Question
A.)The cubit is an ancient unit. Its length equals six palms. (A palm varies from 2.5 to 3.5 inches depending on the individual.) We are told Noah's ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Estimate the volume of the ark (in cubic feet). Assume the ark has a shoe-box shape and that 1 palm = 2.50 inch.
B.) To appreciate the answer above, estimate the volume of a typical house. Assume a shoe-box shape, 55.0 feet long, 30.0 feet wide and 13.0 feet high. Calculate the ratio of the volume of the ark to that of the house.
Explanation / Answer
The ark has a shoe-box shape, so the volume is length x width x height.
If we want to express the size in cubits, we have 300 x 50 x 30 = 450,000 cubic cubits
If we want to express the size in feet, it gets to be a bit trickier...
We know that one cubit = 6 palms and 1 palm = 2.5 inches, thus 1 cubit is 6 x 2.5 = 15inches
To get feet, we divide 1 cubit by the number of inches in a foot = 15 / 12 = 1.25
So 1 cubit = 1.25 feet
So now we have (300 x 1.25) x (50 x 1.25) x (30 x 1.25) = 375 x 62.5 x 37.5 = 878906.25 cubic feet.
Now the volume of shoe-box shape = 55x30x13= 21450
Ratio= 40.974
Thanking you !! :)
