Question
In this lab, you have found that magnets and ferromagnetic materials attract one another. Suppose you
were given two iron bars of identical size, shape, and mass. One is a permanent magnet while the other is
not. Formulate a method by which you could identify which is the permanent magnet. Your method
should not require the use of a third object.
When you are ready, call your instructor over. She will ask one of the members of your group to close
their eyes, and will then give that person two metal bars of the same size and shape, one of which is a
magnet, and the other of which is ferromagnetic. If the member of your group can figure out which is
which (without help), everyone in your group will receive a point of extra credit.
Explanation / Answer
there is one easiest method---
place one bar horizontally and hold the other bar vertically just above the first one.
if the horizontal bar gets attracted then the vertical bar is a permanent magnet or else it is the iron bar because if the magnet is horizontal then there would be no magnetic field at its centre
