answer with fully explination pleaseee!
A tall cart is moving in a straight line with speed 5 m/s. The cart itself has a mass of 20 kg. In addition to the cart's mass, there is a brick with mass 4 kg hanging underneath the cart. As the cart, moves along it passes over a stationary 1 kg platform on wheels. The cart and the platform do not touch, but as the cart passes over the platform it drops the brick. The brick lands on the platform and sticks. Before the brick is dropped, what is the total momentum of the cart/brick/platform system? With what speed does the platform move after it 'catches' the brick? What is the direction of motion for the platform/brick object relative to the direction of motion of the cart? What speed must the platform have before the brick is dropped if it is to stop after it 'catches' the brick? What direction relative to the cart's motion must the platform be moving before the brick is dropped the stop happens?Explanation / Answer
(a) initial momentum of the cart + brick body = (m1 +m2)*v = (20 +4)*5 = 24*5 = 120 kg*m/s
(b) We take the (platform+brick) as the system and apply momentum conservation
Initial momentum = Final momentum
4*5 + 0*1 = (4+1)*v
v = 4m/s and this platform moves towards the cart after brick falls on it.
(c) If the (platform+brick) as the system has to stop the final velocity of both is zero
Initial momentum = Final momentum
1*u + 5*4 = (4+1)*0
u = -20m/s
So the platform has to move towards cart while both are moving towards each other
