(b) How much work is done in compressing the springs?


This one has been kicking my butt for several days as well as the butts of all the responders on Chegg so far. Although it's not really advanced considering this is question is straight out of a college freshman level physics book I've posted this one here in the Advanced Physics subject in hopes of better luck. So for five stars the responder must do at least one or more of the following:

1. Answer the question correctly.

2. Provide a detailed step by step solution with alternate numbers.

3. Provide a detailed step by step cookbook recipe for solving using the varibles accepted letters/symbols.

Here is what I have been trying to solve with, I keep getting it wrong though.


F = k1x k2(x-y0) = (k1 k2)x-k2y0 ==> x = (F k2y0)/(k1 k2)

and Work

(k1x^2 k2(x-y0)^2)/2


also, once when I responded with 0.768m to part (a), it told me I was within 10%, of the correct value but still not correct, All my responses to part (b) have been "significantly different from the correct value".

it is important to note that helping spring acts at high loads ie after the leaf spring ie after the Y0 length of spring is covered helping spring will act load is distributed in two springs hence 4.5 =4.9x +3.8(x-Y0).... i have canceled 10^5 terms hence 4.5 =4.9x +3.8(x-0.5) hence x =0.7356 m =0.74m and work done =[1/2 *4.9*0.74^2 +1/2 *3.8*(0.74-0.5)^2]*10^5 =145 kJ
