Question
1. This is a sealed pipe with vertical tubes open at the top. It is filled with liquid to a height H in the tube on the left side. If the fluid is stationary, the height of the liquid on the right side is
a, b, or c.
2. Next, the ends of the pipe are open, and fluid flows from left to right. If the height of the fluid on the tube on the left is H, then the height of the fluid in the tube on the right is a, b, or c.
3. Next, thefluid flows from right to left in the pipe. If the height of the fluid on the tube on the left is H, then the height of the fluid in the tube on the right is a, b, or c.
Please provide explanations.
Explanation / Answer
a) When the water is stationary the system is in equilibrium and hence the Force due water from the left and from the right will be same and force depends on height of the liquid i.e. F = d.g.H where d is density of liquid. Hence height will be same at both the vertical columns i.e 'b' on right side. b) Now when fluid flows from left to right thus force applied from right side will be less from left side thus using same relation height of right side will be less than left side thus 'c'.. c) Similarly When water flows from right to left , height of water at right colomn will be greater i.e. 'a'.. Hope this clears. Thank you.
