Question

a) A uniform meter stick with a mass of 172g is supported horizontally by two vertical strings, one at the 0 cm mark and the other at the 90 cm mark

What is the tension in the string at 0 cm?

What is the tension in the string at 90 cm?

3) The mobile in the figure below is in equilibrium.

The object B has mass of 0.900 kg. Determine the mass of object C. Assume L1 = 31.8 cm, L2 = 7.20 cm, L3 = 15.5 cm, L4 = 5.10 cm, L5 = 18.0 cm and L6 = 5.10 cm. (Neglect the weights of the crossbars.)

Determine the mass of object D.

Determine the mass of object A.

Tries 0/10

Explanation / Answer

The weight of the stick will act at the center i.e. at 100/2 = 50 cm mark.

Taking moment of all forces about 90 cm mark..
the moment due to tension at 0 cm should balance the moment due to weight

so.. (T_0cm)*( 90 - 0 ) = (0.172) * 9.8 * ( 90 - 50 )
soT_0cm = 0.74915556 N

Taking moment of all forces about 0 cm mark..
the moment due to tension at 90 cm should balance the moment due to weight

so.. (T_90cm)*( 90 - 0 ) = (0.172) * 9.8 * ( 50-0 )
soT_90cm = 0.9364444 N
