Question
The Box B1 with M1 = 5.00kg and initial velocity V1i = 12.0 m/s makes an elastic and head on collision with the box B2 which has a mass M2=10.0kg and is at rest. Obtain the final velocities V1f and V2f by using the formula V1i + V1f = V2i + V2f...
(There is a diagram associated with this question i will use [B1] and [B2] to show the boxes.)
A.) [B1] ---> V1 [B2]
B.) [B1][B2]
C.)V1F<--- [B1] [B2] --->
V2F V1F=? V2F=?
(I need to know this problem is done i've done it plenty of times and just cant figure it out!)
Explanation / Answer
taking velocity towards right as positive
12 + 0 = V1f + V2f (1) as per your diagram Vif is towards left and V2f towards right
conserving momentum
5 x 12 + 10 x 0 = -5 x V1f + 10 x V2f
60 = -5V1f + 10V2f
12 = -V1f + 2V2f
V1f = 2V2f - 12
puttin in 1
12 = 2V2f - 12 + V2f
24 = 3V2f
V2f = 8 m/s
Vif = 16 - 12 = 4 m/s
