Question

For a hydrogen atom in the ground state, determine, in electron volts:

a) the kinetic energy of the electron

(b) the potential energy

(c) the total energy)

(d) the minimum energy required to remove the electron completely from the atom.

I would like thoroughly calculations for part a and b using the formulas I have attached. I looked at the solution manual and plugged it into my calculator and I kept getting the wrong answer.

Kinetic energy of the electron in the nth orbit is Kn = 1/20 me4/8n2 h2 Potential energy of the electron in the nth orbit is Un = -1/20 me4/4 n2 h2

Explanation / Answer

a 13.6 eV

b -27.2 eV

c -13.6 eV

d 13.6 eV
