Question

PRACTICE IT EXERCISE
Suppose the same experiment is run with a different light source. If the first-order maximum is found at 1.90 cm from the centerline, what is the wavelength of the light? Use the worked example above to help you solve this problem. A screen is separated from a double-slit source by 1.22 m. The distance between the two slits is 0.0302 mm. The second-order bright fringe (m = 2) is measured to be 4.35 cm from the centerline. Determine the wavelength of the light. Determine the distance between adjacent bright fringes.

Explanation / Answer

a) y = m lambda L/d
4.35E-2 = 2*lambda*1.22/0.0302E-3
lambda = 5.38E-7 m= 538 nm

b) distance = lambda L/d = 4.35/2 = 2.175 cm

Exercise
1.9E-2 = 1*lambda*1.22/0.0302E-3
lambda = 470.3 nm
