Question

I've been trying to get why 2 x 10^7 is the answer for the past hour and can't get why. Can someone please explain to me how when I add the sources electric field intensity and subtract the sink electric field intensity I don't get the right answer. An explanation would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

Determine the electric field strength at a point 1.00 cm to the left of the middle charge shown in the figure below. N/C If a charge of -3.60 mu C is placed at this point, what are the magnitude and direction of the force on it? magnitude N direction

Explanation / Answer

the electric field due to 6 muC is towards right, the electric field due to 1.5 muC is towards left and electric field due to -2 muC is towards right

so Enet = Edue to 6muC + Edue to -2muC - E due to 1.5 muC

=> Enet = 9*10^9*6*10^-6/(4*10^-4) +9*10^9*2*10^-6/(9*10^-4) - 9*10^9*1.5*10^-6/(1*10^-4)

==> Enet = 2*10^7 N/C

the distance from 6muC is (3-1) = 2cm

the distance from -2muC = 2+1 = 3cm

distance from 1.5 muC = 1 cm

as it is in cm so the sare is cm^2 = 10^-4 m^2

b) F = qE = 2*10^7*3.6*10^-6 = 72 N towards left
