Question

Two charges are fixed in place on the x-axis as shown.  The charge at x = 0 is negative and has magnitude q = 2 uCoulombs (1 uCoulomb = 10-6 Coulombs).  The charge at x = d, (d = +12 cm), is positive and has magnitude Q = 4 uCoulombs.  Find a point x =                 xo along the x-axis at which the electric field is zero.

                xo =         ____________     cm ????

Explanation / Answer

have to be closer to the smaller chargeand to the left of it so direction are opposite

so

k q/x^2 = kQ/(x+d)^2

2*(x+.12)^2 = 4*x^2

x=0.2897 m

so

answer is -28.97 cm
