Question
In the figure particle 1 of charge +q and particle 2 of charge +3q are held at separation L = 6.01 cm on an x axis. If particle 3 of charge q3 is to be located such that the three particles remain in place when released, what must be (a) the ratio q3/q and the (b) x and (c) y coordinates of particle 3?
In the figure particle 1 of charge +q and particle 2 of charge +3q are held at separation L = 6.01 cm on an x axis. If particle 3 of charge q3 is to be located such that the three particles remain in place when released, what must be (a) the ratio q3/q and the (b) x and (c) y coordinates of particle 3?Explanation / Answer
Solution:
Let charge of particle 1 (p1) be +q
Charge of particle (p2) be +3q.
Charge of particle (p3) be q3.
Note that p3 must have negative charge to hold the 3 particles in place.
In order to keep p1 and p2 in place, as they both are positively charged, so p3 must lie between them with negative charge.
p3 must be equally attracted to both of them (for equilibrium).
Then
F13 = F23 ; force between p1 and p3 = force between p2 and p3.
k(q1)(q3) / r1
