Explanation / Answer

1. Answer: there are two types of cells in eukaryotic organisms, somatic cells and germ cells. The somatic cells are used for growth and development of organisms, the type of division which occur in these somatic cells is called as mitosis or equational division. In this division 2 identical daughter cells are formed from dividing mother cell. The chromosome number remains same (2n).

In contrast meiosis occur in germ cells or generative cells which form gametes and take part in reproduction. Meiosis is also called as reductional division, because each daughter cell receives half of chromosome number. In this division 4 daughter cells are formed.

2. Answer: In mitosis each cell divides once to complete division and in meiosis the mother cell divides twice to complete the division.

3. Answer: In mitosis two daughter cells will be formed and in meiosis four daughter cells will be formed.

4. Answer: In mitosis the chromosome number in daughter cells remains same as mother cell (mother cell=2n; daughter cells=2n). In meiosi the chromosome number is reduced to half in daughter cells when compared to mother cell (mother cell=2n; daughter cells=n).

5. Answer: In mitosis the resulting daughter cells will be identical because there isn't any rearrangement of genes on chromosomes and the chromosome number remains same in the daughter cells. But in meiosis 2 daughter cells will be identical and in same time will be different from other 2 daughter cells due to recombination.
